Global Forum delegation visits Algeria to strengthen ties and prepare future work
09/06/2022 - A Global Forum delegation led by the Head of the Secretariat, Ms Zayda Manatta, visited Algiers from 30 May to 2 June, in order to strengthen the relationship with recent member Algeria. Several meetings were organised, including with the Minister of Finance, Mr Abderrahmane Raouya, the Head of the tax administration, Ms Amel Abdellatif, as well as with Algeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Central Bank.
Technical meetings were held to prepare and discuss a working plan, to explain the benefit of the Convention on Mutual Administrative Assistance in Tax Matters and the peer review process in relation to the exchange of information on request (EOIR) standard – Algeria’s EOIR review will be launched in 2024. The Global Forum delegation also presented different options for possible co-operation with the OECD in regards to international taxation.
Algeria joined the international fight against tax evasion in September 2021, by becoming the 163rd member of the Global Forum on Transparency and Exchange of Information for Tax Purposes. A first high-level contact had taken place in November 2021, when Algeria's Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, Mr Aïmene Benabderrahmane, took part in a meeting with Ms Zayda Manatta.
The Global Forum is the leading multilateral body mandated to ensure that jurisdictions around the world adhere to and effectively implement both the exchange of information on request standard and the standard of automatic exchange of information. These objectives are achieved through a robust monitoring and peer review process. The Global Forum also runs an extensive capacity-building programme to support its members in implementing the standards and help tax authorities make the best use of cross-border information sharing channels.
